I’m a founder, engineering leader, writer and CTO coach. I co-founded Credit Kudos (acq. 2022) and was CTO and part of the founding team at Surfboard (acq. 2024). I’m a people-oriented CTO which means whilst I’m more than comfortable with technical detail, I focus on the people who build the technology in an attempt to generate more leverage.
Someone once put it to me that the CTO is the only person within an organisation who has a boss but doesn’t have a manager - and that the only way a CTO can get someone to help them is to look outside of their organisation. I started performing that role for a couple of companies in whom I’m invested, and decided to turn it into a business on the side. If you’re interested in my services, reach out!
I’ve built two phenomenal teams by fostering a cohesive, productive, challenging environment in which engineers feel they can do some of the best work of their lives, or so I’m told.
I grew up near Buxton in Derbyshire (where the water’s from) and now live on the outskirts of Cambridge. My wife Ali and I have a little boy, Jackson, and a small black cockapoo, Milly. I studied Computer Science at the University of Manchester, and started my career working for Universal Music Group as a general Software/Data hacker in London.
I’m interested in a lot of things from psychology to programming, crosswords to cooking. I plan to write about some of these things here.
